Glycemic Index - Natural Diet Treatment for overweight, acne, diabetesIt's a big claim to make, that using the Glycemic Index as a guide to our diet and eating habits should help us to reduce our weight, to alleviate acne and type 2 diabetes, and to prevent or delay the onset of various other diabetic conditions related to insulin metabolism. What is the Glycemic Index ?The Glycemic Index, which is also written as "GI" and as Glycaemic Index is the measure of how quickly various foods lead to a rise in blood sugar levels. Blood sugar is glucose, which is naturally absorbed without digestion, and is given an index of 100. All other carbohydrates (see fact box) are absorbed more slowly, the slowest having the lowest GI or Glycemic Index. It was a big shock when researchers discovered that many refined or natural starchy foods led to faster and greater rises in blood glucose levels than pure sugars such as cane or beet sugar, honey, malt sugars, and the like. (See the fact boxes at the end of this article). It overturned the ideas then held about the treatment of diabetes, which sought to control the disease by limiting sugars in the diet. Nowadays the therapy for type 2 diabetes is often a low GI Diet, but it is also the treatment for pre-diabetic conditions, also called sugar intolerance, insulin resistance and so on. What is the role of insulin in diet and diabetes and everyday life?Ideal blood sugar level is between 80120 mgs/dl. Normal activity, exercise and insulin all reduce blood sugar levels, whereas digestion of food, mobilization of fat reserves, and conversion of glycogen (a ready-use store of glucose in the liver and muscles) all increase blood sugar levels. The insulin mechanism becomes defective if overused, and even when it is working perfectly, the body's defences against having too much sugar in the blood lead to overproduction of certain types of fat: for example the Atkins diet will, paradoxically it seems, often result in LOWER cholesterol levels, because and on the other hand eating sweet things will trigger acne because of their effect on fat levels in the blood. How does a low GI Diet therapy help you to lose weight, alleviate obesity ?Diets can only work to lose weight if (all other things being equal) the amount of food you consume is less. A low GI diet slows the rate at which sugar would otherwise would enter the blood. As a result you will feel less hungry for longer and if you judiciously take small snacks between meals you are likely not to feel hunger pangs at all. If you overeat high Glycemic foods on the other hand, insulin will mop up the excess sugar immediately and you will be left hungry before the next meal. The Atkins diet and the "F" Plan both had the same effect as a low GI diet: The Atkins diet by reducing all carbohydrates and the "F" plan diet by concentrating on foods with fibre in them, which also happened to be low GI. Both diets also reduced appetite. The low glycemic index natural treatment operates directly upon blood sugar/insulin relationship, by reverting to foods which are closer to what man used to eat naturally. It truly is the case that one's appetite is less, and that without counting calories one loses weight. How does controlling blood sugar levels help as a treatment for Acne ?Acne results from the formation of an excess of fatty compounds - triglycerides. The degree to which blood sugar varies is possibly less important than the total volume of carbohydrates which is eaten, because a continual excess of them must eventually be translated into storable fat. However we believe that a low GI Diet's effect of reducing appetite will ameliorate acne. What is natural about a low GI DietRefined sugar, white flour, potatoes, rice, maize - all things to avoid - are relatively recent additions to the Western diet. A low GI diet is a return to older, healthier ways of eating. It is a holistic approach to dietary concerns. It is a naturistic method for weight-loss that does not involve drugs or medication.
